How to Empower Employees To Perform Great
by: Andrew Guy
Do
you wish you had what is takes to elevate your company
or team to the next level? Chances are, if you are like
most people who have been in certain positions for any
length of time you crave advancement. This is a great
quality to have, because nothing makes you quit faster
than stagnation.
You may think of stillness or stagnation as a pond or
body of water that has not been mixed (turnover) for
some thousands of years. Wow! Now that's a smelly
thought. Do you smell that? Believe me, its not a pretty
sight or odor to behold. Therefore, progress is the
order of the day. With progress comes building something
much greater and going far beyond your normal
expectations. If you do only what is expected of you
then your future in any position is limited and will
soon become obsolete. The key here is to build others to
do what you do, and even better. Almost like an
investment with unlimited returns.
Empowerment is an act of acknowledgment.
It's a simple process with big returns and works like this: you can get
people to do anything you want if they feel that they are part of the big
picture. If your team feels or develop any suspicion that their
contributions are dispensable, invaluable, and replaceable or only a patch
to a temporary solution, they will leave. No one will follow you. And if
they do so, best believe that it is temporary and they have ulterior
motives. People want to be remembered. Simple!
Although this is not the only example, but is a reality, empowerment,
inclusion, and promise are the same reasons why someone people are willing
to strap a bomb to themselves and blow up an airplane or building--all in
the name of "I am part of something big and revolutionary that will be
immortalized for years to come."
If you can garnish the principle of empowerment and use it for the right
purpose, your company, staff, co-workers and team will be unstoppable. The
only thing that will stop them is death.
The Next thing you want to do is increase the
value of anyone you work with. This must be done even if they are on your immediate team; however,
collectively, they are. If
you work in the same environment, value them. So how do you go about doing
this? You share what you know. Sharing is one of the most powerful forms of
strength building any organism can ever embody. Think of yourself and your
organization as having a symbiotic relationship that is comprised
wholeheartedly and fundamentally of covalent bonds, one of the strongest
bond known to the existence of living things. These bonds are very strong because of their sharing components.
Together they are stronger than each individual bond, so are people.
Have you heard the term "two heads are better then one?" well it's a fact, and here's why!
Sharing equips the involved parties or people with the same information that
you have. This means everyone is able to contribute fully; and
should one fall, the internal strength will remain because it is equally
share among the remaining.
Another thing that sharing does is that it removes ego and self-glory. If you
want a team to fail quickly, allow one person to feel more valuable than the
other or create a riff among them; you will have guaranteed a successful
failure. This is the term known as "divide and conquer;" meaning, you are as
strong as your weakest component. Therein lies the importance of sharing
information to build each other up, and thus reducing or eliminating the
weak links or bonds.
The next step is to show humility regardless
of your status or position. There is nothing worse than a high-hearted,
pumped-up, overly self-acclaimed leader. Most if not a large majority end up dead because no
one likes them, and only a few people put up with them because they either need a
job or due to some personal requirement or obligation.
It is vital for others to know and see that you are not only approachable,
but also compassionate toward their shortcomings. This creates a type of
haven and security that no amount of zeroes behind your name can ever
suffice. And the best part is that the people in whom you have invested your knowledge will
protect you at all cost, should push come to shove, and when things fall apart.
Listen, listen, listen, and listen some more!
This is key. God the creator is the wisest of all. He knows and places a
higher priority on listening than speaking. Jesus repeatedly told his
disciples to listen. And if He were just speaking in general to a bunch of
stiff-necked onlookers, or warning anyone He would say: "Those who have ears
to hear, let him hear what thus saith the Lord of Host" (Matthew 11:15).
Your chance of learning more about others and getting to know them is directly related to your ability to
listen and hear their hearts. They will tell you if you are
willing to listen. And having heard their thoughts, gripes and complaints,
and concerns, you will become more equipped to lead, make the
necessary adjustment and set your course to bring out the greatness
in your team.
The beauty of empowering others is that
you too will also get empowered in the process. Empowerment is like wildfire, nothing leaves untouched
when it spreads in the right envrronment. Your job is to pread it. Your sense of purpose will be
ignited when you see the difference you can make in the lives of others. Now
that's a drug worth sharing with the world! Your energy will be contagious. You can get high on the "right empowerment" any
day, and it will never hurt you. But the best part to this is that you can pass
it on and receive no jail time.
These steps will change your life should you choose to implement them into your everday life, where you live, work, and play.
You are now more equipped today than you were yesterday or even five minutes
ago. It is now your duty to spread the word and begin the transformation to
empowering your people to perform at their greatest! Go get 'em!
